Computer Security
Security should be a concern whenever you do anything with your networked computer. It is an active process that starts with strong defenses: a firewall, anti-virus software, and a properly configured operating system. Security is a continuous endeavor, that requires you to stay informed about current threats and to regularly update your computer's software. It's about making smart decisions about your passwords and other sensitive information. 24th Century can help you learn to lead a more secure computer and internet experience.
Following a few simple tips can dramatically improve your security online:
- Update your operating system at least every month:
- Windows users update at windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- Mac users, update via the "Software Update" button in your system preferences.
- Run antivirus software and make sure it is updated at least weekly.
- Only enter sensative information (like credit card numbers) on websites that use SSL security - these will display a padlock icon in the bottom-left corner of your browser.
- Avoid insecure software like Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Outlook in favor of alternatives that are not vulnerable to attacks (see Mozilla as a replacement for your browser and email client)
